The organization was launched in 1912 when founder Juliette Gordon Low, seen above with a parrot in 1925, gathered 18 girls for a meeting in Savannah, Georgia.  The Scouts would eventually become one of the biggest groups guiding U.S. youths, with more than 50 million alumnae today.
